The Experience

Each season heralds a new adventure on your senses, the heat of summer
or the lushness of winter are displayed like an ever-changing canvas.
Whether reading on the stoep or exploring the salt pan at sunset,
your experience will become a cherished memory.

The Farm

The farm is a working operation with sheep and cattle. Wheat and other grain crops are grown in winter. Doornfontein is a rare jewel of hospitality, foremost the home of the Melck Family, a fusing of European and
West Coast cultures, you are welcomed as part of the family.

Doornfontein plays host to music, birding, corporate and social gatherings and is acknowledged as a unique wedding venue.

Activities

The Doornfontein experience starts from the moment you leave the tar road and enter through the farm gates. The open expanses of fields and Renosterveld welcome you as you approach the farmhouse.

From the homestead one can enjoy a leisurely walk along the farms roads towards the Salt Pan or along the meandering Berg River, enjoying wide vistas, speckled with indigenous Fynbos. Cattle, sheep, wild pigs, and springbok share this space, together with flocks of migratory birds.

During the spring months of August and September the fields explode into a mass of floral splendor as the famous Namaqualand daisies come into bloom.

One can pass the time enjoying tea or reading a book on the veranda (stoep) overlooking the dam, a swim in the indoor pool, or in the winter months:
a leisurely afternoon by the fire.

The Climate

The climate is typically Mediterranean with 300mm of annual rain.
Summers are hot and windy, with those gorgeous still days in between. Typically early mornings and evenings are most suited to exploration.
The Farm House and rooms are cool and we have an indoor swimming pool. The lands are shades of brown, the saltpan dry with the Berg River frontage refreshing for walking and swimming.

In winter the lands are green, the saltpan an inland lake, teeming with migratory birds and most nights we have a roaring fire in the Farm House.
Spring, is magic, a canvas of colour, as Fynbos fygies (wild flowers) carpet fields as far as you can see.
